Three winners of the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition gain a cash prize and something even more valuable: a pairing with a Denver-area business leader to help guide and improve their business. For this 19th annual event, one lucky winner will be paired with Jena Hausmann, President & CEO of Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Hausmann pursued the health administration field when she experienced the loss of a loved one. Realizing that health care needed, “more empathy and compassion,” Hausmann began her career in Minnesota where she worked to improve patient and family experiences at the Fairview Health System and then the University of Minnesota Medical Center. In 2004, she and her family relocated to Colorado when Hausmann took a job at Children’s Hospital Colorado, one that led to her current position as President & CEO.
At Children’s, innovation is an important aspect of Hausmann’s leadership. Under her direction, the hospital has been recognized nationally and internationally for its medical, research, education, and advocacy programs, and it has grown to include more than 11,000 professionals in Aurora, Colorado Springs, and at 14 additional specialty care locations across the state.
For Hausmann, being a mentor is a way to support organizations like Young Americans Center for Financial Education that make our community a better place. Her own children have participated in Young AmeriTowne, a program also supported by Children’s Hospital Colorado, where students gain skills that will, in Hausmann’s words, “serve them their whole life.” She adds, “Financial security is an important aspect of overall healthy well-being.”
As mentor to a young business owner, Hausmann hopes they learn as much from the experience as she has advice to impart. “Nothing is more rewarding than watching one’s dreams become a reality,” notes Hausmann.
Hausmann’s mentee, a winner of the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition, will be announced at the virtual awards ceremony on October 1, 2020. Limited sponsorships are still available.
