Young AmeriTowne is best known for providing students with a hands-on experience in the free enterprise system.  But that’s not all!  Thanks to Xcel Energy, AmeriTowne citizens working in thSponsor Spotlight: Learning about Energy Conservation at the Xcel Utility Companye Utility Company Shop also explore energy conservation tips and practice making their community more energy efficient.

As part of a commitment to local communities, Xcel Energy donated over $13.5 million in 2015 to support areas such a STEM education, economic sustainability programs, workforce development, and disaster relief.  An important initiative of Xcel Energy in Colorado is the support of Young Americans Center, specifically the Young AmeriTowne program.  Xcel Energy, in partnership with Landis+Gyr, sponsors the AmeriTowne Utility Companies at the Denver and Lakewood locations, making the shops come to life with uniforms, hats, work activities, digital media, and business cards.

Utility Company Technicians have two main responsibilities while in Young AmeriTowne.  First, they must manage their shop’s sales by advertising their products, watching their product inventory, and adjusting the prices as needed.  The Utility Company sells three different products to Towne citizens.

Sponsor Spotlight: Learning about Energy Conservation at the Xcel Utility CompanyAt the same time, Technicians provide an important service to the shops of Young AmeriTowne—they help make the Towne more energy efficient by performing routine maintenance.  For example, Technicians replace traditional light switches with energy-saving motion detector switches, add weather-stripping to windows, and turn down the thermostat in shops that are too warm.  Xcel Energy has provided invaluable guidance on these activities, offering recommendations and even designing and creating the activities themselves.  Also, Located inside the Utility Company is a kiosk that helps the Technicians learn about energy-saving practices.  Provided by Xcel Energy, the kiosks are available for any citizen to use as well.
