How many adults can say that they interviewed for their first job at age 10?
That’s part of the Young AmeriTowne real-world experience proud partner Schomp Automotive has made possible. Young AmeriTowne introduces 5th graders to a wide range of careers open to them including good paying jobs that require advance training but not a college education, such as an auto technician.
Before arriving in AmeriTowne, students complete their first job search, first job application, and first interview. To begin their search, students read help wanted ads in their student workbook and take a skills assessment quiz to help them think about what jobs they might like to hold.
For example, students who like to learn by doing will thrive in the Parts and Service Shop. Young Americans partnered with Schomp Automotive to create actual maintenance and repair activities in the shop, including replacing spark plugs and checking the oil level. Technicians read and interpret vehicle error codes, just like in a real mechanic’s shop. There’s even a real car engine for the students.
Students get to select up to six different AmeriTowne jobs to list on their application. They also describe their education, work experience, and interests. Students are encouraged to dress professionally for their job interviews, often with school administrators or business/parent volunteers rather than their teachers.
AmeriTowne participants feel prepared for and excited about their jobs in Young AmeriTowne and in their future. As 10-year-old Elizabeth writes, “Young Ameritowne prepared me for the real world and for a real job.” Thanks to Schomp Automotive, a career-for-a-day in Young AmeriTowne is as realistic as possible.
