An Investment Company Advisor advertises her products in front of her shop.

Saving, spending, and sharing money wisely are a few of the biggest takeaways from a student’s experience in Young AmeriTowne, but how does a business earn that money in the first place? What will make a shop’s product stand out enough to get consumers to spend their hard-earned money on it?

When it comes to advertising, there are a few options already built into a day in Towne: the Radio Station, TV Station, and Newspaper will run ads for you at reasonable prices to your business. But, let’s say someone didn’t hear that ad or didn’t buy a Newspaper…now what? Time to get creative!

With tons of fun products for sale in each shop, the competition is fierce for squishy stress balls, custom-engraved dog tags, and disappearing ink, among other awesome treats! All it sometimes takes to sell a popular product is a quick look around the shop, or the powerful tool that is word of mouth. But how can you pique the interest of your potential customers for those products that may not be flying off the shelf? We’ve had tons of students through our doors every day this year with great ideas on how to build a bit more excitement for some of those goods!

Some of the marketing sights and sounds around Towne might look a little like this:

The Bank, selling their bouncy balls with $100 bills printed on the inside, will invite you to play a game of their own invention using their products. From across town, you can hear the faint calls from the Sign and Print Shop to prank your friends with disappearing ink. Pass by the Utility Company, and they’ll probably offer you a free sample of some hard hat shaped candies. When you visit the doctor at the Medical Center, they’ll try to entice you with a cool glow-in-the-dark sticky skeleton at a low price before you go back to work. The Fitness Center crew will be sure to grab your attention by doing jumping jacks in front of their shop…might as well go in and see what they’re so excited about!

By the end of the day, students have discovered so many unique ways to get the word out about their products, and they are not afraid to take these opportunities. They’re making those smart decisions for their business, figuring out how to market to their customer base, and earning enough money to pay back their bank loan by the end of the day. They are putting their lessons into action, and taking advantage of the hands-on experience of a day in Young AmeriTowne!

It would also be great to see your financial literacy programs offered online!
