Every year, the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition pairs three Denver-area business leaders with three up-and-coming youth entrepreneurs. The first mentor we are highlighting for the 2021 competition is Jandel Allen-Davis, President and CEO of Craig Hospital – a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that exclusively specializes in the neuro-rehabilitation and research of patients with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.
Dr. Allen-Davis is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and was in active practice for 25 years. Her past roles at Kaiser Permanente included associate medical director of external relations for the Colorado Permanente Medical Group, regional director of patient safety and physician chief of the Wheat Ridge Medical Offices. Dr. Allen-Davis was elected to the Colorado Permanente Medical Group Board of Directors in 1998 and chaired the board in her final year.
A graduate of Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Allen-Davis completed her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Before going to work at Kaiser Permanente in 1994 as a staff obstetrician gynecologist, she was an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and spent four years in the Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Ariz., during which time she also served as member and chair of the American College of Obstetrician Gynecologists’ Committee on Alaska Native and Indian Affairs.
Dr. Allen-Davis believes health care will improve when all the primary stakeholder groups — clinicians, patients, elected officials, community leaders and employers — can collaborate effectively to put the patient at the center.
Dr. Allen-Davis is an active participant in the community and currently serves on the boards of Dartmouth Geisel Medical School; Denver Botanic Gardens; the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce; National Jewish Health; Colorado Hospital Association; the Denver Branch of the Federal Reserve Board; is a member of the Colorado State Economic Development Commission; and, is engaged with several community organizations.
She has been recognized as: a 5280 Magazine “Top Doc” in the Denver Metropolitan Area; by Modern Healthcare as one of 2020’s Minority Leaders to Watch in Healthcare; is a recipient of the MLK Business Award (2020); is a recipient of the 2020 Del Hock Lifetime Achievement Award; is a recipient of the CPEP George D. Dikeou outstanding leader award (2021); is a recipient of Geisel School of Medicine/Dartmouth 2021 Career Achievement Award; and, in addition to other leadership awards, was named as an Outstanding Woman in Health Care by the Denver Business Journal. She is married and has two children. She enjoys gardening, hiking and is a fiber artist whose work has been displayed in several galleries over the years.
Through Allen-Davis’s mentorship with the Young Americans Center for Financial Education, Craig Hospital is supporting its community and kids who are starting their own businesses, no matter their background. For Allen-Davis, being a mentor means paying forward the partnerships she’s had in her life while helping a young person build a network of support.
Allen-Davis’s mentee, a winner of the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition, will be announced at the gala and awards ceremony on October 7, 2021. Limited table sponsorships are still available.
