Young Americans Center for Financial Education is pleased to introduce you to Margaret Kelly, the retired CEO of RE/MAX, who is generously serving as a mentor in this year’s Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition.
Margaret Kelly’s first job was working in her dad’s machine shop in Detroit, Michigan. Starting at age 12 until she was 22, Margaret regularly worked in her dad’s machine shop creating nuts out of steel. This experience taught her the value of hard work, and it also encouraged her to pursue a college degree and a career in finance—one that eventually led to being CEO of an international corporation.
As CEO of RE/MAX, Ms. Kelly was responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic direction at RE/MAX across North America and in more than 95 countries around the world. She successfully led her business through the “uncharted territory” of the housing crash in 2005. By the time she retired in 2015, RE/MAX boasted more than 120,000 agents worldwide.
She has been recognized by countless organizations for her exceptional leadership skills and commitment to community involvement, and likewise she has been recognized for being an advocate for businesswomen around the globe. Most people know her as the CEO who talked candidly about the real estate market.
As a mentor, Ms. Kelly is thrilled to pass along the lessons and knowledge she gained in her career. “There’s an old saying that one can see further on the shoulders of giants” says Ms. Kelly. “I hope to be one of those giants for a young person.”
Ms. Kelly’s mentee, a winner of the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition, will be announced at the gala and awards ceremony on October 4, 2018. Limited tickets and table sponsorships are still available.
