Amelia Moore, a fifth-grade student at Steele Elementary, wants to use her business, Mimi’s Minis, for good by donating a portion of her profits to local animal shelters. By participating in the YouthBiz Marketplace, she’s selling her products directly to consumers looking to shop small this holiday season.
Mimi’s Minis features a collection of miniature stuffed animals. Amelia started the business last spring. When she couldn’t play with friends due to COVID-19, Amelia sewed a red fox finger puppet and then decided to close up the bottom and turn it into a toy. “No two Minis are exactly alike, and they make a special holiday gift for young children, teachers, anyone really!” said Amelia in a recent interview. She plans to donate 50 percent of her profits this year to organizations that help animals such as pet shelters and animal sanctuaries.
In the six months since she started Mimi’s Minis, Amelia has created dozens of creatures and has enjoyed selling to family and friends. She hopes to reach even more shoppers through the YouthBiz Marketplace, which is open online from November 27 through December 6. Young Americans Center for Financial Education hosts the event every year to provide young people with real-life experience in entrepreneurship and business ownership.
