Walk into Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center, and you’ll immediately see a kid-friendly gift shop filled with toys, games, stuffed animals, candy, and even products made by young entrepreneurs. This unique space is the result of a special partnership between Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children and a YouthBiz Star entrepreneur.
In 2015, Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children’s President and CEO, Maureen Tarrant, signed on as a mentor for a winner of the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars business competition. “I’ve admired the work of Young Americans Center for Financial Education for many, many years,” said Maureen in a video filmed in advance of the competition. For Maureen, being involved is a “thrilling” experience.
Over the next year, Maureen guided Charming Wine Charms, owned by then 11 year-old Isabelle May. In addition to helping Isabelle perfect her sales pitch and marketing strategy, Maureen was instrumental in providing expanded retail opportunities for Isabelle and other young entrepreneurs by opening the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children gift shop. Inside the shop, there is a shelving area filled with products created by young entrepreneurs, including Isabelle’s wine charms.
Fast forward to 2019, and Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children continues to support the hands-on learning taking place at Young Americans Center. The gift shop still features products by young entrepreneurs, and financial support for both the Spotlight on YouthBiz Stars gala, which benefits Young Americans Center, and for hands-on programs including Young AmeriTowne, International Towne, and YouthBiz, ensures that the next generation of youth have the skills and experience that will help them be financially successful adults.
