Unprecedented times allow for the unique opportunity to utilize creativity and new platforms in order to stay connected with each other. Here at Young Americans Center, we were excited to launch our first-ever virtual Girl Scout Badge Class last Saturday, April 18.
Brownie class participants had originally planned to meet in person for the class, but those plans changed due to COVID-19. Instead, the troop members logged onto their personal computers to earn their Philanthropist badge.
After a virtual “get to know you” activity, they began a series of interactive lessons and games in order to meet Philanthropist badge requirements. Activities included a Time, Talent, and Treasure exercise, a philanthropy role-playing scenario, and the completion of a “seven days of giving” booklet.
Participants filled out an exit survey at the end of the class and will receive their badge in the mail. One participant commented, “I loved learning about ways to help people.” Troop leaders and parents who observed the class were similarly pleased. “The information and materials were perfect,” wrote a parent. “The girls had so much fun!”
Despite not being able to gather in one setting, the girls were engaged and loved being able to see each other. Troop Leader Mary Leathers commented, “It was a fun format, and I was pleased to see [the scouts] sharing their thoughts on this type of virtual platform.” The class ended with everyone singing the Girl Scout song. A fun experience was had by all, and the girls are excited to receive their badge!
Young Americans Center staff members are excited to continue delivering Badge Classes via live-stream instruction as well as through pre-recorded classes. Classes continue through the remainder of the spring and summer semesters, and new classes are added regularly.
