In our current environment, YouthBiz has moved much of its programming online so that aspiring entrepreneurs can participate safely at home.  Last month’s Secret Garden Garnishes was a fun introduction to garden art!

Receiving supplies for the YouthBiz Secret Garden Garnishes Workshop was almost as exciting as the workshop itself!  Just ask six-year-old participant, Nora.

There were nine participants in the workshop, ranging in age from six to thirteen.  Youth received all supplies via mail in advance, and for some, receiving mail was just as exciting as the actual workshop!

YouthBiz Director Maite Wantwadi guided the participants through the steps of creating a hanging lawn ornament and a staked garden creature.  Participants could attend the live demonstration on a Monday afternoon, or they could watch the recording at their convenience.

Both options produced creative results, and both were a lot of fun.  Six-year-old Nora said the most fun was making her caterpillar because, “I got to draw a face on it.”  Although she’s not sure about starting a garden garnishes business just yet, she remarked, “I would definitely make one again!”

Instructor Maite appreciated being able to interact with youth, even if through a computer screen.  “It was fun to interact with participants, answer questions, and give advice.  That’s something I’ve really missed in the last two months.”

As we navigate this new normal, YouthBiz Workshops and other Virtual Programs are a great opportunity for youth (and parents!) looking to have fun and learn a thing or two along with way.
