This month, Young Americans would like to introduce you to Rich Jennings, a long-time Center Board Member and advocate of youth financial literacy. As Senior Vice President of the Mountain West Region at Comcast, Rich oversees all operations for Colorado and New Mexico, serving more than 2.1 million customers and 3,200 employees every day. Serving Young Americans since 2006, Rich has had the unique position of being both a member and the board chair. In each of his roles, Rich has used his years of experience to thoughtfully guide the growth of the organization. With a focus on youth leadership, Jennings is helping thousands of Colorado youth become tomorrow’s leaders.
Rich began his 25-year career in the telecommunications in 1993 as an Assistant General Manager with Time Warner Cable. He joined Comcast in 2005, and since then he has worked in both the Freedom Region, serving Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, and New Jersey, and the Mountain West Region, serving Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Arizona and New Mexico.
In addition to his attention on the external customer, Rich’s passion for employee development and support has greatly contributed to Comcast’s success. An area of focus for Rich is leadership development. In a recent article for Comcast Colorado, Rich notes that, “I always encourage emerging leaders to spend time developing emotional intelligence in service of building a great culture…Similar to a sports team – the basketball coach can’t be on the court taking the shots. Coach has to build a team, instill the culture and mission, and empower the team to take the shot and win the game.”
Also central to Rich’s beliefs is balancing work, family, and the community. Echoing the views of cable pioneer and Young Americans’ founder Bill Daniels, Rich believes that, “Companies have an obligation to make an effort to give their resources and help replenish a community – in big and small ways.” Along with his service on the Young Americans Board, Rich has served on numerous other boards including Colorado Concern, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Telecommunications Association, Urban League, The Downtown Denver Partnership, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Junior Achievement, Kiwanis, the Mary Lou Mahone Foundation, and the Wisconsin Cable and Communications Association.
Rich and his wife Lesley have three daughters: Jaelyn, Micah, and Aureon. He hopes that they, too will recognize the values of leadership, financial literacy, and community involvement that have led Rich to a successful and fulfilling career.
