The best kind of learning comes from real-world experience, which is why Young Americans Center for Financial Education has partnered with Colorado Garden Foundation to bring the outdoors inside Young AmeriTowne. Thanks to a Foundation grant, AmeriTowne in Denver and Belmar each have three enormous planters filled with green and flowering plants all year long.
Since its beginnings, Colorado Garden Foundation has awarded more than $8.3 million to fund horticulture related grants and scholarships. Projects have included school landscape improvements, community gardens, research programs, scholarships for college students, and Young AmeriTowne. This is all possible due to funds raised at Colorado Garden Foundation’s two signature events: the Colorado Garden and Home Show and the Colorado Fall Home Show.
The Garden and Home Show begins this Saturday, February 24 and lasts through March 4. Guests are invited to discover the Rocky Mountain region’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious garden and home show, which features 11 professionally landscaped gardens, educational seminars, and more than 650 companies to help inspire your perfect outdoor space.
Maintaining the gardens of Young AmeriTowne is the responsibility of the Parks and Recreation/Community Relations Director, an employee of Towne Hall. In addition to watering the planters, this student also coordinates the daily customer service competition and calculates the total donations at the Towne Donation Station.
The goal is for students to come away with an appreciation for how gardens and horticulture-related industries impact the community. As a result, having real-life plants in Young AmeriTowne not only enhances the AmeriTowne experience, but it also helps students from urban communities gain exposure to a career path that might not otherwise be an option.
