Rural Young Americans Center for Financial Education in Wray, Colorado auctioned off a decadent peanut butter chocolate cake to the highest bidder at their annual Valentine Affair fundraiser on Saturday, February 10. No one would have guessed that one cake would bring in $2,500.
The event benefitted the two hands-on financial literacy programs of Rural Young Americans: Rural Young AmeriTowne and Money Matters. Children in eastern Colorado benefit extensively from these programs, which mirror the offerings of Young Americans headquartered in Denver but are customized for the ru. Schools and students travel only an hour or so to participate, rather than four or more to reach programs in Denver.
Tom Quiggle, auctioneer-extraordinaire, kept the event lively despite the blizzard conditions outside. In addition to the infamous dessert auction, event guests had the opportunity to hear about the impact of Rural Young Americans on the community.
Board Member Susan Sheridan noted that this year’s fundraiser was a great success. “Nearly 100 people attended,” she said, “Which demonstrates the deep level of support we are fortunate to have in the Wray community.”
