Being a member of the Youth Advisory Board at Young Americans Center for Financial Education offers incredible opportunities.  Not only do the members get to learn about banking, finance, free enterprise, entrepreneurship, running a non-profit, how to read a budget, and how to fundraise, but we are also able to attend unique and exclusive events around Colorado.  We represent Young Americans through speaking engagements, networking, and creating a positive youth presence at these events.

A weekend at the Broadmoor

On February 22nd, the board was invited to attend The Leadership Program of the Rockies Annual Conference at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.  This program works to develop the “leaders of tomorrow.”  At the conference, alumni from the program as well as other movers and shakers from various movements around the country attend to mingle and get updates on the program.

Several members of the board were able to attend the event as guests of former Finland Ambassador, Marilyn Ware.  We attended various police sessions led by speakers ranging from Mayor Mia Love to John Stossel.  Through the sessions, we learned about confidence and messaging.   It was also a good experience to network with business leaders in the community.

After the policy sessions, we were invited to join Ambassador Ware at her dinner table.  We also got to sit with many of award recipients for the evening, which was a unique experience.

Overall, attending the conference was a great opportunity to hone our networking skills and use our business etiquette training from the Youth Board meetings.  It was wonderful to meet Colorado business and political leaders, and I would like to keep in touch with many of them.

Taking stock

I have been so lucky to be a member of the Youth Advisory Board and learn invaluable life skills.  I am able to speak confidently in public, attend events with ease, and work on being financially sound.  I would highly recommend all incoming 8th to 12th graders to apply!

You can get more information on the Youth Board here.  Applications for the 2013-2014 board are due June 29th and can be downloaded here.

Do you have any questions for any members of this year’s Youth Board?
