Young AmeriTowne On the Road just returned from its farthest voyage this summer: Albuquerque, New Mexico! The program delivered a hands-on lesson in financial education to 21 elementary school students through a week-long summer camp program.
This summer marks the third consecutive year that AmeriTowne On the Road has reached students in New Mexico. This year, as in years past, the program set up at Central New Mexico Community College. Students spent the first four days of summer camp learning the ins and outs of AmeriTowne, including supply and demand, banking, business, and government, and they also gained workforce-readiness skills by working in teams, filling out a job application, and budgeting their time.
At the end of the week, students ran the nine-shop AmeriTowne, participating as both producers and consumers in Towne. One highlight from the week came from Director Chris O’Reilly: “We had a student that really didn’t want to participate in the camp when she was dropped off on the first day. We had a discussion with her mother, and we decided to have the student stick it out. She ended up having a blast! The mother told us that this week was her daughter’s favorite camp of the summer!”
The AmeriTowne On the Road crew now has a few weeks to prepare for a trip to Grand Junction in September. The fall will be here before we know it!
