Each month, Young Americans Center highlights an outstanding sponsor in our “Spotlight” series. This month’s sponsor helps introduce students to careers in the energy industry as well as how to incorporate energy savings tips into their homes and businesses.
Xcel Energy (www.xcelenergy.com) is a major U.S. electricity and natural gas company operating in eight Western and Midwestern states. The company is committed to providing cost-effective, clean, responsible energy delivered with the highest standards for safety, reliability and responsiveness. Xcel Energy supports communities in four important areas: STEM education, workforce development, environmental stewardship, and access to arts and culture. In 2014, Xcel Energy invested over $13 million in support of communities across its service territory.
As part of these initiatives, Xcel Energy has supported a number of programs at Young Americans Center for Financial Education. Over the last two decades, Xcel Energy helped to create and publish student workbooks for both Young AmeriTowne and International Towne, participated in annual fundraisers, and is currently sponsoring the Utility Company shops at Young AmeriTowne’s locations in Denver and Belmar.
The student technicians of the Xcel Energy Utility Company provide energy-saving maintenance around Towne. Their tasks include replacing traditional light switches with energy-saving motion detector switches, adding weather-stripping to windows, and turning down the room temperature. In addition to their maintenance work, Xcel Energy Utility Company employees build real, working circuits in their shop. They also experience supply and demand by selling puzzles and light-up whistle key chains to their customers.
The Xcel Energy Utility Company is a perfect shop for students who love movement, working with their hands, and staying busy. Young Americans Center is proud to partner with Xcel Energy to provide these real-life experiences for young people.
