Can you imagine a world without the Big Mac? Or Chicken McNuggets? Or Happy Meals? Luckily, back in 1954, a man named Ray Kroc discovered a small burger restaurant in California, and wrote the first page of McDonald’s history. From that humble start as a small restaurant, McDonald’s has become one of the world’s leading foodservice retailers with more than 36,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries.
At Young Americans Center for Financial Education, we are especially grateful for the support that McDonalds provides to our Young AmeriTowne program. The Young AmeriTowne snack shop workers have a busy job. The shop, which is sponsored by McDonalds, is the busiest hang out spot for students when on break. These workers have to work around the clock to keep their customers happy and to provide excellent customer service. The shop sells refreshing drinks, delicious cookies, and toys which are all donated by McDonalds. Snack Shop Cashiers set prices and use a point of sale system to charge customer’s debit cards for their purchases. They only get a limited amount of supplies in their morning and afternoon deliveries so they must price their products appropriately. In addition to keeping the general operations of the snack shop flowing, Snack Shop Accountants must keep track of all business expenses and revenue. Once the snack shop workers have the opportunity to take their own break they must track their spending by balancing their personal checkbooks.
This hands-on, real-life experience helps to prepare our future generation with skills that will forever carry with them – no matter what career they decide to pursue. In 2015, McDonald’s USA/Rocky Mountain Advertising Cooperative Association and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver committed to a partnership with Young Americans Center for Financial Education with nearly $29,000 in total support. Thank you to McDonalds for your commitment to the nearly 26,000 students who visit Young AmeriTowne each year.
