Young Americans Center for Financial Education is fortunate to have many partners that are doing good in the community. This week, we’d like to highlight our proud sponsor King Soopers who, in addition to supporting hands-on financial education for youth, has also committed to a national effort aimed at ending hunger and eliminating waste across the Kroger Company by 2025.
Called Zero Hunger | Zero Waste, the Kroger initiative strives to help solve a large problem in the U.S. According to a recent Kroger press release, 42 million Americans struggle with hunger, yet an estimated 72 billion pounds of food ends up in a landfill every year. “That just doesn’t make sense,” says Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO. “We are committing to doing something about it.”
The students who participate in Young AmeriTowne also have a role to play in this initiative. Kroger encourages community members to share their ideas for how to best accomplish the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Plan, noting that, “We can’t do it alone.” In addition, Young AmeriTowne students have the option to donate their AmeriTowne dollars to a local nonprofit that provides hunger-relief services called Denver Club for the Humanities.
