Meet Remi, Andia, and Brooklyn.  These are not your typical 5th grade girls.  On the ride home from soccer practice, lots of girls would be talking about homework, their friends, and boys.  Instead, driving home these young ladies discussed the devastating floods that impacted thousands of people throughout Colorado.  They decided in the car to create a campaign they dubbed “Dimes for Disasters” and raise money from their classmates to donate to the Red Cross.  Their goal was at least $50.

Spreading the word

The three friends from Denver Christian immediately set to work crafting fun jars to encourage donations.  With the help of their parents, they made a video that would be shown at their school.  They worked with their teachers to set out the donation jars and started spreading the word.  The three showed their video at school and also got to make an announcement over the intercom (“That was my favorite part,” confessed Andia).

The dimes — and pennies, nickles, quarters, and bills — started pouring in.  Remy said, “We had to replace the jars after just a few periods because they got so full.”  The girl kept pushing the campaign for a full week.  They even had a restaurant owner friend put a jar out for her customers to donate.

The results

After just six days, the girls were amazed at how much money had come in.  “We counted [the bills] but there were so many we lost count!” Brooklyn reported.

On Wednesday, October 2, the three fundraisers brought in several boxes full of coins and bills to be counted by the staff at Young Americans Bank.  Watch the process here:

In total, the young ladies far exceeded their goal and ended up raising more than $1,000!  (To get the exact amount, be sure to watch the video above.)  They received a check in return, made out to the Red Cross, which they will give to help the victims of the recent Colorado floods.

Congratulations Remi, Andia, and Brooklyn!  Well done on a great campaign and some fabulous fundraising!
